What Is Philip in the Bible?

Person

This is what Matthew and Mark call the first husband of Herodias, a half brother of Herod Antipas.

It can mean

  1. Careful: he is not the apostle Philip, nor Philip the tetrarch of Luke 3:1.
  2. In Luke 3:19: the Douay-Rheims only says “his brother’s wife”; Mark 6:17 gives his name, Philip.

Where it appears in the Bible

Mark 6:17; Matthew 14:3

What the Bible says

Mark 6:17

For Herod himself had sent and apprehended John, and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias the wife of Philip his brother, because he had married her.

Matthew 14:3

For Herod had apprehended John and bound him, and put him into prison, because of Herodias, his brother’s wife.
