Subiaco
A place in the history of the Church
A place in the mountains near Rome, by the Aniene River. The life of St. Benedict’s monks began there.
What happened here
- The cave: St. Benedict wanted to please God alone. He left Rome and lived alone for three years in a cave near Subiaco.
- The monasteries: many disciples joined him, and he founded his first monasteries near Subiaco.
Today
St. Benedict’s cave, the Sacro Speco, is now part of a monastery.
