River Chebar
A place in the Bible
A river or canal of Babylon. The exiles from Judah lived beside it. In the Douay-Rheims it is called “Chobar.”
What happened here
- Ezekiel: he was among the exiles by the river Chebar when the heavens opened and he saw visions of God.
- The call: there the Lord spoke to the priest Ezekiel, in the land of the Chaldeans.
Today
No one knows for sure which one it was. Many think it was a great canal of Babylon.
Where it appears in the Bible
Ezekiel 1:1; Ezekiel 1:3
What the Bible says
Ezekiel 1:1
Now it came to pass in the thirtieth year, in the fourth month, on the fifth day of the month, when I was in the midst of the captives by the river Chobar, the heavens were opened, and I saw the visions of God.
Ezekiel 1:3
The word of the Lord came to Ezechiel the priest the son of Bud in the land of the Chaldeans, by the river Chobar: and the hand of the Lord was there upon him.
