Cherith
A place in the Bible
A stream facing the Jordan River, where the prophet Elijah hid. In the Douay-Rheims it is called “Carith.”
What happened here
- Elijah in hiding: the Lord told Elijah to hide by the Wadi Cherith.
- The ravens: there the ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning and in the evening, and Elijah drank from the stream.
- The drought: after a while the stream dried up, because there was no rain in the land.
Today
No one knows which stream it is. Some look for it near Jericho; others, east of the Jordan.
Where it appears in the Bible
1 Kings 17:3; 1 Kings 17:5-6; 1 Kings 17:7
What the Bible says
1 Kings 17:3
Get thee hence, and go towards the east and hide thyself by the torrent of Carith, which is over against the Jordan,
1 Kings 17:5-6
5So he went, and did according to the word of the Lord: and going, he dwelt by the torrent Carith, which is over against the Jordan. 6And the ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening, and he drank of tile torrent.
1 Kings 17:7
But after some time the torrent was dried up, for it had not rained upon the earth.
