Cana

A place in the Bible

Cana

A town in Galilee where the wedding took place at which Jesus worked his first sign.

What happened here

  1. The wedding: the wine ran out, and Mary told Jesus. Jesus changed the water into wine. It was his first sign.
  2. Nathanael: one of the disciples, Nathanael, was from Cana in Galilee.

Today

No one knows for sure which town it is today. By tradition, it is Kafr Kanna, near Nazareth. Another possible place is Khirbet Qana, a little farther north.

Where it appears in the Bible

John 2:1; John 2:11; John 21:2

What the Bible says

John 2:1

And the third day, there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee: and the mother of Jesus was there.

John 2:11

This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee; and manifested his glory, and his disciples believed in him.

John 21:2

There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas, who is called Didymus, and Nathanael, who was of Cana of Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples.
