What the Bible says

Genesis 18:11; Genesis 21:2-3

Now they were both old, and far advanced in years, and it had ceased to be with Sara after the manner of women.

Genesis 22:1-2, 11-12

1After these things, God tempted Abraham, and said to him: Abraham, Abraham. And he answered: Here I am. 2He said to him: Take thy only begotten son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and go into the land of vision: and there thou shalt offer him for an holocaust upon one of the mountains which I will show thee. 11And behold an angel of the Lord from heaven called to him, saying: Abraham, Abraham. And he answered: Here I am. 12And he said to him: Lay not thy hand upon the boy, neither do thou any thing to him: now I know that thou fearest God, and hast not spared thy only begotten son for my sake.

Genesis 24:67; Genesis 25:24-26

Who brought her into the tent of Sara his mother, and took her to wife: and he loved her so much, that it moderated the sorrow which was occasioned by his mother’s death.

The path of Isaac

  1. Before Jesus. He was born when Abraham was a hundred years old. When he was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him. Genesis 21:4-5
  2. Before Jesus. On the day he was weaned, Abraham held a great feast. Genesis 21:8
  3. Before Jesus. He went up the mountain with his father, carrying the wood for the sacrifice. An angel stopped Abraham, and Abraham offered a ram in place of his son. Genesis 22:6, 11-13
  4. With Jesus. At forty he married Rebekah. With her he was comforted after the death of his mother, Sarah. Genesis 24:67; Genesis 25:20
  5. With Jesus. Rebekah could not have children, and Isaac prayed to the Lord for her. At sixty he had the twins Esau and Jacob. Genesis 25:21, 24-26
  6. With Jesus. Because of a famine he went to Gerar. There he sowed, reaped a hundredfold and reopened his father’s wells. Genesis 26:1, 12, 18
  7. Afterward. When he was old and blind, he blessed Jacob, thinking he was Esau. Genesis 27:1, 23
  8. Afterward. He died at one hundred and eighty, and his sons Esau and Jacob buried him. Genesis 35:28-29
